ButterflyVR is a new open source social vr game under active developemnt, built in godot and rust. We intend to exist as a less monetized version of the more popular social vr games.
While the project is still in its early stage of development, we would still encourage people interested in the project to give the game a try. Much of the core functionality is already implemented and we intend to maintain full compatability with all content uploaded to our server indefinetly.
We think it is important for open source projects to be built on an open source stack. The godot engine is a flexible and mature platform with an easy to learn editor making it the best choice for lowering the barrier to entry for uploading content and we try to maintain the same philosophy when developing our content creation toolkit. Even if you are new to godot or to game engines as a whole godot has plenty of high quality existing documentation which makes it easy to pick up. This ease of use extends to GDScript, which much of ButterflyVR runs on, making it easier for developers to contribute to the project. ButterflyVR intends to always target the latest version of the godot engine, and will remain up to date whenever possible to keep the process streamlined.
While the GDScript language is powerful and easy to use, it comes with two major tradeoffs which make it unsuitable for all our needs: it is missing many of the common libraries you would expect from more mature programming languages, and it suffers in performance as an interpreted scripting language. While most of our codebase is not affected by either of these issues, for more specialized modules such as the networking code we rely on rust for higher performance and prexisting libraries.
Development is moving quickly, meaning this list might not always be up to date. This list was last updated 2026/09/10 and in intended to represet the upcoming 0.2.0 stable release.
